EMERGENCY FEEDING PROGRAMS
2021 to Current
One of the things we do at Hands Serving Uganda is provide emergency feeding programs for people who do not have the means to feed themselves. In December 2021, Betty (Director of Operations) reached out because her heart was breaking for the people that she knew in Aremo Village that would go without anything to eat on Christmas Day. In the West, we can’t even really imagine what it would be like to go without anything to eat, especially on a day like Christmas. There are so many places for people to go for support in countries like Canada. But in countries like Uganda, people are still starving to death every single day. We did a last-minute fundraiser and were able to raise enough money to feed approximately 200 children and 90 elderly people/caretakers. Each person received posho (a local dish made from maize flour) and beans, with a little bit of meat and something to drink.

In December 2022, we undertook an emergency feeding program in Aremo Village. With the help of another donor from the UK, we were able to raise the funds needed to provide 105 desperate families with a package that included the following items (enough food to feed a family for approximately 3 to 4 weeks):
-
10 kilos posho
-
10 kilos beans
-
1 bar of soap
-
Salt
-
Cooking oil
-
1 blanket (many people sleep on the ground or a sack)
When we went to visit some of our emergency feeding program beneficiaries in September 2023, we brought each of them a small package of items, just to lend some assistance during a time when everyone is struggling to survive. Every person we visited spoke about hunger. This is one of the reasons we knew that we needed to come up with a long-term solution to the hunger issues we were seeing. That is the reason we are planning to establish a Community Garden in Aremo Village. Our goal is to eradicate hunger in this community. In the meantime, there are still situations that come up that require emergency assistance.
