About Us

Julie was born and raised in Manitoba, Canada. She is a Christian who has a heart for helping the people she believes God has called her to serve. She is passionate about showing people in Uganda the love of Christ by giving them a hand-up, not just a hand-out. She has witnessed the cycle of poverty and the hopelessness that so often leads to addictions, abuse, and/or teenage pregnancies. She believes in helping the entire family unit and the community as a whole; both physically and spiritually. Through Hands Serving Uganda (HSU)and its generous supporters, Julie is working towards helping communities in Northern Uganda become self-sufficient and showing them the importance of “loving your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39). She is a Senior Client Accounting Administrator by profession, and outside her usual work, she spends most of her free time spreading awareness, planning, and coordinating fundraising activities for HSU.

Betty’s calling began way back when she was still a teenager, living near a war zone in Northern Uganda. During this war, the Lord’s Resistant Army (LRA) were busy killing people, and abducting both adults and children in the region where she lived; Betty lost quite a number of people she knew to that war. It was during that time when she made a decision in her young heart to help children and people who are suffering. Years later, when she first started working with an organization that supports street children and slum families, she realized that suffering children and families are everywhere; and more people need to serve to bring them hope. In 2006, during the Watoto Conference dubbed “Hope for Africa’s Children”, she was sent by the organization she worked for to attend and learn. She did more than learn. Her zeal and drive knew no bounds. She was determined to serve in any way she could. It was at that very same time that she met Julie and other volunteers from Canada. And since that very first meeting, they have been working together to serve the vulnerable population of Uganda.

Darlene has been a CPA, CA for over 15 years. She brings to the board experience from several finance leadership roles with both public and private companies. Darlene is passionate about volunteering with several charities and is honored to be part of an organization that helps people experiencing poverty in Uganda to cover essential needs and grow to become self-sufficient communities.

Chris was born in Abim district, Karamoja region, located in the North-eastern part of Uganda, an area ravaged by war, and with poverty and conflicts resulting from cattle-rustling. He holds a Certificate in Counseling, entrepreneurship and job creation awareness training. He is a self-motivated and enthusiastic community worker with significant experience in poverty action intervention, family conflict resolution, HIV intervention, and program development. He has a passion to see that every family – especially most vulnerable families overcome poverty and experience fullness of life as promised by God. Chris is a key member of the Hands Serving Uganda team, as he works very closely with the community members we serve on a regular basis. He is directly involved in assessing the families in the community.

Since her childhood, Amber has been drawn to the landscape and its people. This interest first began with regular weekend camping trips with friends and family. She has a passion for working with children and she started ministering to them in 2022, by teaching Sunday school at her church. Amber first met some members of the Hands Serving Uganda team while attending a Community Group at her church. She was inspired by the work they were and are still doing, to care for the vulnerable people of Uganda. Amber provides administrative support and plays a role in decision making for the organization as part of the board. She has volunteered in the past but is relatively new to the non-profit community. She is excited to take part in this amazing opportunity!
